Francis Bellamy
The pledge honors the American flag which represents the values and freedom of Americans loyal to their country. For the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America, the Pledge of Allegiance was written. Francis Bellamy, a children's magazine writer was the author of the pledge. The pledge was first published in the Youth's Companion and read: "I pledge allegiance to my flag and to the Republic for which it stands: one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." Over the years, the pledge was altered many times and now reads: "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, under god, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
